The ITSM Aviation Factbook is a comprehensive annual report with statistics and figures on the dynamics and evolution of the commercial aviation industry in Europe

The presentation event featured:

  • A discussion of the main results and evidence from the empirical analyses by Prof. Renato Redondi.
  • A round table of industry professionals and policymakers debating around the future prospects, challenges, and trends shaping the role of aviation in the future of mobility.
  • A presentation by Prof. Stefano Paleari regarding the research that ITSM conducted on behalf of Palermo airport on the development prospects and critical issues of air transport for the Sicily region.

Overall, the period 2019-2024 looks like the first five-year period lost in air transport at the European level, both for passenger and cargo traffic. At the domestic level Italy is exhibiting a full recovery in passenger traffic volumes, and in low-cost terms it exceeds the european average. Even if, although early 2023 see a decline in freight traffic compared to 2019 levels.

Press conference on tourist signpost project around Bergamo

The research falls within the framework of the projects carried out in preparation for the national event Bergamo-Brescia Italian Capital of Culture 2023, aimed at developing a signage system that aligns with the cultural values generated by the local inhabitants and caters to travellers in order to facilitate their utilisation of urban space and available resources.

Tourist signpost represents one of the forms of information and communication within the system of tourist resources and attractions of a specific territory. Its purpose is to make these resources readily accessible to different categories of visitors in a direct and immediate manner during their stay in the area.

The objective was to rethink the tourist signpost of Bergamo, including its resources, services, and city gateways, in an inclusive manner by devising a research methodology that leads to an understanding of the existing signage and its enhancement through the use of georeferenced digital technologies.

In the context of the Future of Mobility project, during the second week of April 2023, the “Mobility Workshop Symposium” was hosted by the Graduate School of Design (GSD) at Harvard University, USA.

The Symposium is part of a multi-year academic collaboration research between GSD Harvard University and University of Bergamo, it serves as a valuable platform for sharing knowledge, exchanging ideas and encouraging further exploration in the field of transportation. During this two-day workshop researchers and students from both universities have been investigating the experience of light mobility. In particular, graduate students with heterogeneous backgrounds (business, engineering, tourism) presented their research projects at the faculty.

The projects presented during the workshop were primarily based on the personal experiences of the students in Bergamo. These projects covered a wide range of topics on the enhancement of light mobility with the urban environment. Key areas of research included: (i) ensuring bicycle safety around the University’s departments located in the city centre, (ii) improving the mobility and accessibility of people with disabilities at major tourist attractions, (iii) exploring innovative infrastructures for connecting low-density areas to the city centre through cycling, (iv) investigating the integration of autonomous vehicles to augment public transportation systems.

The Symposium concluded with three keynote speakers who provided insightful analyses on the re-thinking of the relationship between individual and urban environment form a human-centric perspective. They shed light on the need to prioritise human experiences, needs and well-being when designing and implementing future mobility solutions.
